Hiking Local - Finding Great Local Trails

When I think about going for a hike, I usually associate hiking with jumping in the car and driving out of the urban and suburban areas. We have a vision in our heads of finding that perfect trail where there is absolutely nobody. I want to open peoples eyes when it comes to local hiking and local trails.

Mt. Nemo Conservation Area, Burlington, Ontario

In Southern Ontario we are blessed with a number of major walking and outdoor recreation trails. From the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail to the Bruce Trail and finally the Trans Canada Trail, this is just a sample of the fantastic trails just waiting for you to plan an adventure.

In Hamilton Ontario, they have the Rail Trail that connects East Hamilton to West Hamilton. It cuts across the top of the Escarpment (The Mountain) and wending its way through the Dundas Valley and finally to Brantford. This is a great hike and it has both easy, moderate and extreme areas of the trail. It also connects to the Bruce Trail as an added bonus. If you check out Van Wagners Beach on Lake Ontario you can join up with the Hamilton area Water Front Trail.

Burlington Ontario has the Water Front Trail running along the Lakeshore and the Bruce Trail in North Burlington. Another gem that most people forget about is the amazing hiking trails at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. If you live in the Oakville/Burlington area, you have to check out the four seasons of fun and recreation that can be had there.

With so many options available to people in their own communities, hiking local is something you should try this weekend. It could be the city or town trail network, a portion of the Waterfront Trail or maybe a small section of the Bruce Trail. Plan that next adventure on your local trails.

  1. Frank - Those are really nice pictures. I had no idea we had such pretty hiking trails so close to civilization. Thanks for the info.
